Painting I

Course Description:
An introduction to oil painting, the student will acquire a basic knowledge of the materials
and execution principals involved in painting on a two dimensional surface. The teaching
method will involve short lecture and demonstration (when needed) with a majority of class
time devoted to hands-on experience.
Course Objectives: Upon completion of the class the student should be able to:
- Understand the use of pigments, mediums, brushes and painting surfaces.
- Understand the basics of composition, modeling of form/figure, ground, and atmosphere.
- Understand the basics of the science of light and color theory and the methods of color mixing
through observation.
- Appreciate from a historical perspective the development of oil painting through history to
the present and the skills necessary to continue to develop individual painting skills.
